Where to Stay Near Yellowstone
Gateway towns: easier than in-park
West Yellowstone is the most convenient. It is minutes from the west entrance, has the most hotel options, and is where most day tours depart ($325–$400). It is a small tourist town with restaurants, shops, and a gas station. Motel rooms here are easier to land than anything inside the park, and the west gate is minutes from town.
Gardiner, Montana (north entrance), is smaller, colder in winter, but charming. It is a 30-minute drive to Old Faithful and the geyser basins. Many 2-day tours stay overnight in Gardiner. Hotels are $70–120/night. The setting is more rural than West Yellowstone.
Jackson, Wyoming (south entrance) is the most scenic but the farthest from Old Faithful (1.5–2 hours). It is a wealthy town with upscale lodging, great restaurants, and views of the Teton Range. Most Jackson-based day tours ($325) depart early to cover the distance.
