Grand Teton with Yellowstone: why one base doesn’t work, and which packages do both

In short: day tours cover only Yellowstone. If you want both parks, you need multi-day packages or be willing to drive between them yourself. Most multi-day packages from Salt Lake City include both parks. Jackson (the gateway to Teton) is on Teton’s south side but still 2+ hours from Old Faithful or the Canyon area; basing from one town for both parks means long drives daily. I’ve driven both countless times; here’s the honest math.

Why one base doesn’t work

Jackson is iconic — the town gateway to Grand Teton National Park. But Jackson sits on Teton’s south end. Yellowstone’s closest road (the south entrance) is 60 miles and 2+ hours from Jackson; Old Faithful or the Canyon area (the heart of the park) are even further. If you base in Jackson and try to hit both parks in one day, you’re spending 4+ hours driving and 4 hours looking at things — that’s not a vacation, that’s a road trip nightmare.

The real options

Multi-day packages that include both parks

All four of my multi-day options include both parks. The two-day $650 option is Yellowstone-only; all others bundle Teton.

Jackson day tour alternative (Teton + quick Yellowstone)

Want one base and one day? Stay in Jackson two nights. Day one: Jackson day tour to Yellowstone ($325, Lower Loop). Day two: self-drive Grand Teton (free entrance to the scenic loop). This is the compromise: you see the main Yellowstone attractions and Teton fully, but Yellowstone day tours cover only the Lower Loop. Miss the Upper Loop (Lamar Valley, Mammoth) entirely. Worth it if budget or time is tight; otherwise, the multi-day packages are less driving and more park time.

Insider tip

All multi-day prices are per person in USD. Book 3–7 days ahead in normal months; further out in summer and holidays. If you love driving and want to save money, the two-base self-drive strategy works — just know the daily mileage upfront.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do Yellowstone and Grand Teton from a Jackson base?

Yes, but plan two days minimum if driving yourself. Jackson is on Teton's south side. Day one: Teton (2 hours of park roads). Day two: drive north 2+ hours to Yellowstone Lower Loop. One-day Yellowstone tours from Jackson exist but they skip the Upper Loop (Lamar Valley, Mammoth). Better: hire a multi-day tour that handles both parks and the driving.

How far is Jackson from Yellowstone?

Jackson to the south entrance: 60 miles, 2+ hours. Jackson to Old Faithful: another 90+ miles, so plan 3+ hours total. Jackson to the Canyon area (the highest Yellowstone traffic): 4+ hours drive. This is why one-base daily driving to both parks exhausts.

What if I want to base in Jackson and see both parks?

Stay two nights. Day one: Grand Teton (free, self-drive). Day two: Yellowstone day tour from Jackson ($325, Lower Loop). You miss the Upper Loop but see the main attractions. Better: stay three nights and take the multi-day package ($2,199 wildlife tour from Jackson) if you want both parks fully without daily 4-hour drives.

Which multi-day package covers both parks best?

All four multi-day options (except the two-day, which is Yellowstone-only) include both parks. For wildlife focus: $2,199 wildlife tour. For value: $948 three-day. For in-park sleep: $2,112 Old Faithful lodge. Read multi-day packages for details on each.

Can I drive myself between Jackson and Yellowstone on my own time?

Absolutely, if you like driving. But budget 2+ hours each way plus wear on a rental car. Yellowstone is huge; if you are basing Jackson and driving to Yellowstone daily, you are choosing driving time over park time. The multi-day tours handle logistics and let you focus on the parks.

Is the $650 two-day tour a combo, or just Yellowstone?

Just Yellowstone. Covers BOTH the Upper and Lower loops of Yellowstone, but no Grand Teton. For both parks, choose the $948+ multi-day packages from Salt Lake City or the $2,199 wildlife tour from Jackson.
